What is that new car smell?  Well that smell is all the plastic and paint off gassing.  When you smell an object you are inhaling VOC’s (volatile organic compounds).  Everything off gasses, however man made polymers often produce harmful carcinogens when they off gas.  To create a better and healthier interior environment low and no VOC products can be used.

One of the most harmful off gassing chemicals is formaldehyde.  Formaldehyde is a known carcinogen and is used to bind pressed woods like plywood.  Since formaldehyde is a naturally occurring chemical you cannot use pressed woods with zero amounts of the chemical.  The best alternative is low formaldehyde plywood, also called “formaldehyde free” plywood.  While this product is a little more expensive than regular plywood, it does not off gas harmful carcinogens.

Plastics off gas as well, one of the most harmful are plastic made from BPA (Bisphenol A).  BPA is a known to have harmful affects on the body’s endocrine system.  To bypass the use of BPA and PVC (Poly Vinyl Chloride) we use plastics made from polypropylene.  Polypropylene is a safer alternative to PVC and BPA and is often used is medical tools.  Polypropylene also has a lessened off gassing effect.

Adhesives and paints are two larger off gassing offenders.  At 360 signs we use low and no VOC paints, sealants and adhesives.  No VOC paints are water based and biodegradable.  There are also paints made from strictly organic materials like milk.  Most low and no VOC paints take a little longer to dry but are indistinguishable from regular paint.

At 360 Signs we take the proper steps and work with safer materials to give our clients the safest sign options.  We also have LEED AP resources that can help you with any of your LEED needs.
